And ˹remember˺ when Moses said to his people, “Allah commands you to sacrifice a cow.” They replied, “Are you mocking us?” Moses responded, “I seek refuge in Allah from acting foolishly!”2:67
In the land of the Children of Israel, there was a wealthy man who had no children and only a nephew who would inherit his wealth. This nephew, driven by greed, decided to kill his uncle. Under the cover of night, he committed the crime and moved the body to the doorstep of another man, aiming to blame the innocent. The next morning, the nephew cried out for justice, claiming that his uncle had been murdered. The community, stirred by the accusation, prepared for conflict, with each side ready to fight. Weapons were raised, and the threat of violence loomed. However, among them were wise men who sought to avoid unnecessary bloodshed. They reminded the people that the Messenger of Allah, Musa (Moses), was still among them and could provide guidance. So they approached Musa and explained the situation. Musa listened carefully and then conveyed Allah’s command: "Verily, Allah commands you that you slaughter a cow." The people were surprised and confused. "Do you make fun of us?" they asked, unable to see the connection between the command and the murder. Musa assured them of the seriousness of the instruction. If they had complied without question, any cow would have sufficed. But their hesitation and dispute made the task more difficult. They needed to find the specific cow Musa described, which took some time. Eventually, they found the cow, but its owner, realising their desperation, demanded a high price: its skin's fill of gold. Reluctantly, they paid the amount, slaughtered the cow, and touched the dead man with a part of it. Miraculously, the man came back to life. They asked him, "Who killed you?" He pointed to his nephew, revealing the truth. Then he died again. The nephew was denied his inheritance, and justice was served. From that day on, it was decreed that anyone who committed murder for the sake of inheritance would be denied any claim to it.
