We hear about the Dwellers of the Town in Surah Ya Sin.
Give them an example ˹O Prophet˺ of the residents of a town, when the messengers came to them.36:13
It is said that the town mentioned in the above verses is a reference to a town called Antakiya (Antioch). However, there are other opinions - Allah knows best. It was situated near the Aasi river in As-Suwaidiyyah, near the Mediterranean Sea. Historically, the city was first built by Selauqas I, in 307 BC, who established it as a capital in the kingdom. In the Abbasid time, it was a main city in the area, known for its beauty, fresh air and water. [Atlas of the Quran]
Their king Antiochus, and people, worshipped idols so Allah sent down three messengers: Saduq, Masduq and Shalum according to Al Qurtubi.
We sent them two messengers, but they rejected both. So We reinforced ˹the two˺ with a third, and they declared, “We have indeed been sent to you ˹as messengers˺.”36:14
The people replied, “You are only humans like us, and the Most Compassionate has not revealed anything. You are simply lying!”36:15
Allah sent two messengers to the town, and followed with another to support them. However, the people of Ya Sin doubted them because they did not believe God would sent a messenger in the form of a human.
They threatened the messengers but they continued to preach the truth.
The messengers responded, “Our Lord knows that we have truly been sent to you.36:16
And our duty is only to deliver ˹the message˺ clearly.”36:17
The people replied, “We definitely see you as a bad omen for us. If you do not desist, we will certainly stone you ˹to death˺ and you will be touched with a painful punishment from us.”36:18
The messengers said, “Your bad omen lies within yourselves. Are you saying this because you are reminded ˹of the truth˺? In fact, you are a transgressing people.”36:19
Then, a man came rushing to exclaim his support for the messengers and their message. His name was Habib An Najjar. [Atlas of the Quran]
Then from the farthest end of the city a man came, rushing. He advised, “O my people! Follow the messengers.36:20
Follow those who ask no reward of you, and are ˹rightly˺ guided.36:21
And why should I not worship the One Who has originated me, and to Whom you will be returned.36:22
How could I take besides Him other gods whose intercession would not be of any benefit to me, nor could they save me if the Most Compassionate intended to harm me?36:23
Indeed, I would then be clearly astray.36:24
I do believe in your Lord, so listen to me.”36:25
He exclaimed his belief in Allah alone, but his people were not happy.
˹But they killed him, then˺ he was told ˹by the angels˺, “Enter Paradise!” He said, “If only my people knew36:26
of how my Lord has forgiven me, and made me one of the honourable.”36:27
After they killed him, he was told by Allah he could enter paradise. In the bliss and bounty of Allah's reward, he said if only his people would have believed they would be enjoying such goodness too.
After this, Allah did not warn them anymore. They were struck by a blast - destroyed.
Hence, why others disagree that this was the town of Antakiya (Antioch) as this town was later visited by some of Jesus disciples. So either the town was destroyed a new people lived there who were sent the disciples and later believed in Jesus or the town mentioned in Surah Ya Sin is not about the people of Antioch.
We did not send any soldiers from the heavens against his people after his death, nor did We need to.36:28
All it took was one ˹mighty˺ blast, and they were extinguished at once.36:29
Oh pity, such beings! No messenger ever came to them without being mocked.36:30
