In the Quran, there is a mention of sea water exploding, which was seemingly an impossible phenomenon 1400 years ago. Skeptics may argue that water extinguishes fire, not knowing that under extreme conditions, water can indeed explode. Modern science confirms that steam explosions can occur when molten lava meets sea water, or in certain other extreme scenarios.
Steam explosions happen when extremely hot substances, like molten lava, come into contact with water. When water is rapidly heated by the molten material, it turns into steam and expands violently, causing an explosive reaction. This phenomenon is known as littoral explosions when it occurs at sea, particularly near volcanic regions where lava meets the ocean. When water comes into contact with very hot substances like molten metal or lava, the water rapidly turns into steam, often leading to violent explosions. This can cause severe burns and a fire hazard to anyone nearby, as the explosion also throws molten material along with itent years; incidents such as lava entering the sea near Hawaii (Kilauea volcano) have injured many due to such explosions .
The Quran in Surah 82:3 mentions:
and when the seas burst forth,82:3
The Arabic word used for "exploded" is فُجِّرَتْ (fujjirat), which refers to a forceful eruption or explosion. In modern scientific terms, this aligns with the concept of steam explosions, where water in the sea explosively vaporizes when it interacts with extremely hot material, such as molten lava.
The phenomenon of steam explosions due to molten lava meeting sea water or other extreme conditions was not known in the time of the Quran’s revelation. Today, it is understood as a result of high heat causing rapid vaporization. Yet, how could an unlettered man living 1400 years ago have described such a process? He must have been a prophet of Allah and this knowledge must be from The Creator of earth and beyond. This is a remarkable alignment between Quranic text and modern scientific understanding, further showcasing the Quran’s divine depth.
